Railroad tycoon William Henry Vanderbilt’s son George Washington Vanderbilt fell in love with Asheville’s scenery and climate during visits with his mother. He was so fond of the area he bought thousands of acres of property and commissioned the French trained architect Richard Morris Hunt to design a summer home. Morris was born in America but he was so talented and revered in France that he was made supervisor of the Louver Museum by Napoleon III. The house was modeled after a 16th century French estate and is the Largest in the United States; it has held that honor for over a century.
