A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced Enayetullah Jewel, Gazipur regional commander of banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), to 64 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) in two cases filed with Joydevpur Police Station in January this year.
Jewel is accused in 33 other cases now pending and under investigation with different police stations in five districts.
Judge Shahed Noor Uddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 gave the verdict in presence of the lone accused for possessing illegal firearms, explosives and ammunition.
In its order, the judge said the accused was given 44 years' RI for possessing firearms and ammunition while 20 years' RI for possessing explosives.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 17 prosecution witnesses in the two cases.
Following the confessional statement of Jewel, Gazipur police raided a graveyard at Dakkhin Khan under Joydevpur Police Station on January 8 this year and recovered the arms, ammunition and bomb-making materials.
The cache included three kilograms of gunpowder, one pistol, one foreign and two country-made shooter guns, 16 bullets, five cartridges and three knives.
Two cases, one under the Arms Act and other under Explosive Substances Act, were filed the next day.
The investigation officer pressed charges against Jewel on March 9. On June 29, the court framed charges against him and the trial began on July 3.
CASE AGAINST SUNNY:
Another Dhaka court yesterday examined statements of prosecution witnesses in an August 17 blast case filed for an explosion near Airport.
The accused in the case, JMB military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny and two others were present in the court and pleaded not guilty and demanded justice.
Judge SM Mojibur Rahman of the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court read out statements of 47 prosecution witnesses.
Three other accused in the case Mostafizur Rahman Musa, Habibur Rahman and Sagir Hossain are still at large.
